Race 9 – The Met Mile

#5 Sharp Azteca

Has quietly been the top sprinter-miler in the country since last year and now gets his chance at the Grade 1 Met Mile against a field that came up mostly sub-par this year comprised mostly of challengers that this horse has already beaten.  Consistently earning Beyer speed figures in the 106 range now and is particularly deadly at this one-mile distance around one turn with 4 wins in 5 career outings including 4-for-4 in the US. Owns big front-end speed, but doesn’t need a clear easy lead in order to win.

Race 11 – The Belmont Stakes

#2 Tapwrit takes the preferred route to the Belmont along with a few other top contenders in this race, losing the Derby, shipping the Preakness, and returning in this spot rested and ready to uncork a top effort. Pletcher trainee won the Tampa Bay Derby this spring and had excuses for both losses since then, including a poor start in the Blue Grass Stakes and then a tough trip against a rail bias in the Kentucky Derby. Should handle the 1 ½-mile Belmont Stakes distance, and that is more than many of today’s rivals will be able to say. Offers value odds at 6-1 on the morning line, and may even go up.

Play in exacta box w/#7 Irish War Cry, who is another well-prepared Belmont contender exiting the Kentucky Derby who skipped the Preakness. He is another horse whose chances were compromised by a rough trip in the Derby while too far from the golden inside part of the track that day. Owns good tactical speed, which is the preferred Belmont Stakes running style, and he’s one of the few horses in this race to break the 100+ Beyer speed figure barrier after doing so twice this year when winning both the Holy Bull and the Wood Memorial. Seems to run one good one and one bad one, and today’s his turn for a good one. Distance no problem. Dangerous.
