Underrated multiple stakes winner came back from the sidelines looking better than ever last time in the 4yo debut which came off of a 10-month layoff. Went wire-to-wire at Fair Grounds for trainer Joe Sharp with a good speed figure, and certainly is no flash in the pan with stakes wins in 2017 at Charles Town and in 2016 in the Springboard Mile at Remington. Been first or second (5 wins) in 7 of 11 lifetime races, and this mile distance is his favorite. Meets a tough field but catches rivals such as McCracken at the right time with that one making his first start of the season off a long layoff.

#14 Mendelssohn turned in arguably the year’s best performance so far when crushing the UAE Derby on the Dubai World Cup undercard by 18 lengths in his first and only dirt outing so far. Hails from the world’s most prominent trainer, Aiden O’Brien, and already came over from Ireland last year to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, a race that turned out to be an ultimate key race with multiple subsequent stakes winners on dirt exiting that race. Half-brother to multiple Eclipse Award-winning filly and mare Beholder is bred for dirt, and the barn always believed he would be better on dirt than turf. Based on the UAE Derby, who can argue? Already won at the equivalent of 1 3/16 miles (further than any in the field), and while he has the speed to go wire-to-wire, he has also been able to rate and win in the past, and will be versatile enough from a pace standpoint to work out a good trip.
Play in exacta box with #8 Audible, who exits back-to-back smashing victories at Gulfstream in the Holy Bull and the Florida Derby, which he won by three easy lengths. Trying to follow the footsteps of last year’s Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming for trainer Todd Pletcher by taking the same Florida Derby-winning path to the Derby as Pletcher’s winner last year. Owns handy tactical speed, but can rate and win from off the pace and should be in a perfect spot from a pace perspective in a race loaded with early speed horses.
