Plus play exacta box w/ #11 A Little Faith
#7 Mary’s France exits a solid
and underrated effort last time out in her US debut after arriving from France
off a three-month layoff. Finished fifth in that local race, but it was not an
effort indicative of this horse’s ability when caught too far behind a glacial
slow pace in a race where closers had no chance. Lost by only a length. Now
goes second off the layoff, gets Irad Ortiz in the saddle, and is expecting a
better pace to chase.
Play in
exacta box with #11 A Little Faith, who was Disadvantaged by the bad turf
sprint rail post, checked early two races ago, and then ran on for an
underrated fourth-place finish when beaten only about a total of a length. Showed
a new dimension of early speed last time out but tired to fourth again, and is
certaionly a life overlay today based on those recent losses. Still has a
record of 2 wins in 3 lifetime outings here at Belmont on the grass, and ran
well in longer races last year so this slight stretch to 7F suits her quite
nicely.

#11 Empire Express
Returns from
almost a year layoff, so he is a question mark based on that, but it is a
strong positive sign of trainer intent to see Irad Ortiz picking up the mount
on this horse for high-percentage trainer Brad Cox who does well with horses
return from long layoffs. This horse’s lone turf outing so far came almost
exactly a year ago when this horse was still a 2yo, and in that race he ran a
speed figure that is still better than all or most of this field is capable of
even now as a bunch of 3yos. This horse returns a more grown up and mature
gelding, and should be able to handle this field with the drop in class versus
maiden claimers in return from the sidelines.
