Looms the pick and horse to beat either on the turf or in an
off-the-turf situation on Friday. Owns recent wins on both surfaces, including
the Belmont turf maiden win and then a big decisive win at Saratoga last time
in the slop in at off-the-turf race at 1 1/8 miles (this race will be 1 1/8
miles if rained off the turf). Remains in good form and won’t face a great
field today.
Race 10
#8 Dearest Kitten
plus exacta box with #6
Malibu Anthem
#8 Dearest Kitten seems
meant for turf and a distance, but the dirt should be just fine too if this
race comes off the turf. Opened career with a pop-and-stop effort in a route
race, and should be legged-up and ready to go a lot further this time around at
what will be a much easier class level than that maiden special weight race was
at Keeneland. Luis Saez picks up the mount for leading trainer Mike Maker, and
exits a key race where both of the top two finishers have already come back to
win their next races.
Play in exacta box with #6
Malibu Anthem, who is listed at 15-1 on the morning line and would be a giant
overlay at anything close to those odds. Ran a trio of turf races last year and
a repeat of any of those efforts in this spot would be good enough to post the
upset. All recent races have been on the dirt, so if this race comes
off-the-turf, it also would actually benefit this horse in that regard, based
on the solid second-place finish last time out. The only knock on this horse is
that he tends to finish second a lot, so use him to back up all of your exacta
boxes.
