was second in the Gotham and third in the Wood Memorial. And then tried the
Preakness to no avail. Brown always said that he thought this horse was never
cut out for the longer distances, and always wanted this horse to be what he
is, a long sprinter or miler. He will get a chance to prove it here today in
this tough race at 6 1/2F with a prep race last time out off a layoff at the
same distance where he had no chance against subsequent Grade 1 sprint winner
Jackie’s Warrior. None the likes of Jackie’s Warrior in this race.

#4 Happy Saver is the defending
champion of the Jockey Club Gold Cup after winning last year’s running at Belmont
with a big speed figure at this 1 ¼-mile distance, and is vying to become one
of the favorite’s in this fall’s Breeders’ Cup Classic along with May Player,
who beat him last time in the Suburban for Happy Saver’s first and only career
defeat. Perhaps Happy Saver did not care for the sloppy track last time, and
Max Player did. But the weather forecast predicts a fast track on Saturday, and
that means Happy Saver is likely to get revenge.
Play in exacta box with #2 Max Player, who was a graduate
of the 2020 Triple Crown series and Grade 3 stakes winner before that at 1 1/8
miles, but finally lived up to his potential last time out when winning the
Grade 2 Suburban over a field that included Heavyweights Happy Savor and Mystic
Guide. Max Player ran well over this track at this distance last year with a
third-place finish in the Travers. Perhaps he only won the Suburban because of
the sloppy track. Perhaps he is getting better now and living up to his
potential, in which case he is dangerous today.
