Longshot upsets field in Malibu Stakes

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Arcadia, CA (Sports Network) - Proud Tower Too, ridden by David Cohen, went wire-to-wire Monday to win the $250,000 Malibu Stakes on opening day at Santa Anita. The Santa Anita meet will run until late April.

Proud Tower Too broke well from the gate and quickly went to the lead. Pressing the pace from the outside was Attila's Storm with Thor's Echo and Diligent Prospect close behind.

The four horses on the front maintained their positions up the backstretch and around the turn for home. At the top of the stretch Proud Tower Too and Attila's Storm were by themselves on the lead.

Down the stretch Proud Tower Too edged past Attila's Storm and went on to post a one length victory. Attila's Storm held second followed by Thor's Echo and Shamoan in the 14-horse field.

Finishing off the board was Illinois Derby winner Greeley's Galaxy and 2004 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Wilko. Wilko closes the calendar year without a win in six starts.

The time for the seven furlong race was 1:21.62.

Proud Tower Too is owned by Tricar Stables and trained by Sal Gonzalez. Earlier in the month the three-year-old posted a win in a stakes race at Hollywood Park, and has won three of his last four starts. The win Monday was worth $150,000 to bring his career earnings to almost $350,000.

Proud Tower Too returned $42.20, $15.00 and $8.60. Attila's Storm paid $4.80 and $3.80, and Thor's Echo paid $5.20 for show.
