Horses To Watch

By: American Turf Club

SUFFOLK DOWNS

AVALANCHER: Can usually be counted on for a check, and 11YO veteran made it win number 29 in latest

when along just in time; right back versus similar stock.

BRIAN STRIKES BACK: Chased wide and came up empty in latest clinker, but relatively fresh face remains

worth using at $4K-tag level; fires very best shots on wet tracks.

CASUAL COUNTRY: Chased wide and gave way in latest, but previously showed life when in similar turf claiming

spot, only at shorter route; another chance.

CLARIDGES: Never posed a threat in latest, but prior two tries (fair attempts from wide spots) make her worth

following versus similar – demand a price, of course.

FAIR PROSPECT: Has speed in her pedigree and should benefit from career debut, in which she raced wide on

turf and managed fifth of 12; likely to improve.

IDENTIC: Battled gamely when second in his local debut making his first start since early-June; well-bred 4YO is

lightly raced and brings major upside.

LITTLE COMPTON: Fell flat when a distant third at 1-2 price in latest, but figures to handle NW2L types at $5K-tag

level in near future based upon previous start.

OLIVER MELLORS: Never got on track as failed favorite Aug. 16, but his pedigree and prior turf starts on tougher

NYRA scene have us intrigued by possible return to grass.

RED ROSALYN: Raced wide throughout latest chase/fade effort; now has two races over course and that can"t

hurt – neither would class drop to $4-5K-tag range.

SILENT SERVICE: Showed good speed and battled throughout when second, beaten just a head in latest; love

lightly raced 4YO’s speed and overall winning profile.

4STARSPECIAL: FLEETING TERM: Never posed a threat in allowance sprint most recently, but barn now has

him primed and battle-tested for top try in third start of current form cycle; speedy.

LONGSHOT: TOMADACHE: Got back to grass in latest, but perhaps against a touch too rich and never posed

a serious threat; relatively fresh and plenty capable of adding juice to gimmicks.

DEL MAR

BROADWAY DEB: A mishap shortly after the start caused her to lose position after the rider

briefly lost an iron. Toss out that sixth-place finish and start again.

COURTNALL: Broke slowly and lost his best chance in well-bet debut on 8/17. Lost by nine lengths

but was less than two lengths out of second.

DIVIDED NATION: Well bet first starter got shuffled back in traffic in debut on 8/15. Too early to

give up on him.

GOLDY ROCK: Was pressured into setting too fast a pace and tired to third as a result on 8/17.

Wire-to-wire threat in second off the layoff.

HEZAJEWEL: Got KO’d in a five-length-gap speed duel and still held on for a close third on 8/14. May

not be denied in next.

HIGH TRACKS: Obviously needed a race in return from a year and a half layoff on 8/15, and further

lost all chance when he missed the break.

IMPRESSIVE GRADES: Finished third of five in return from a year layoff on 8/15. Can benefit from

that outing and improve in next.

JEN’S SPELL: Well-bet first starter ducked in and lost the rider in debut on 8/14. Give her another

shot.

LA BELLA: Spotted the field 15 lengths at the start on 8/16, but somehow managed a mid-pack

finish in an encouraging effort on 8/16. Live overlay.

LOVELY AMERICAN: First starter broke awkwardly and then rushed up into a three-way battle

for the lead and held on for fourth while ahead of her early challengers. May not be a maiden

for long.

ROYAL PLACE: Was boxed in behind horses in traffic when trying to do his best running and

then finished with interest too late when finally clear. Worth another shot.

SHEZSOSPIRITUAL: Lost ground five wide into the first turn and could do no better than third

on 8/14. Try again.

SPEEDY PICK: Got caught in a three-length-gap duel for the lead and did well to settle for fourth.

Still looms a threat to shake loose.

STRENGTH WITHIN: Got hung up in traffic which might have cost him the race on 8/11. Can make

amends with a clean trip.

WESTWARD STAR: Got hooked and cooked in a five-length-gap duel for the lead and tired badly

last time. Toss out the last-place effort and hope for overlay odds in next.

WIXOE EXPRESS: Finished a decent third in a tough five horse field in difficult 1 1/8-mile assignment

off a brief freshening. Don’t overlook.

YOUGOTTAWANNA: Was out-finished after being interfered with in deep stretch, and that trouble

may have made the difference between winning and losing. Rates another look.

4STARSPECIAL: DESERT PEARLS: Broke poorly and lost as an odds-on favorite on 8/15. Can make

amends with a clean start.

LONGSHOT: INDIAN BLANKET: Toss out fourth-place finish on 8/14 when she got caught dueling

in impossible two-turn fractions of :21.4 and :45. Can rebound.
