Santos decides to serve suspension
By: Sports Network
Saratoga Springs, NY (Sports Network) - Jockey Jose Santos began serving a 10-day suspension Tuesday, one day after withdrawing his appeal. Santos was suspended for careless riding during a July 23 ride on the opening day at Saratoga Race Course. Santos was aboard Light Night, but was eventually disqualified for interfering with Sohaib, which was ridden by Jerry Bailey. Light Night was on the inside of the track coming down the stretch with Santos using his whip on the horse"s left side. However, Santos then quickly slid the whip into his right hand and Light Night swerved, causing him to hit Bailey"s horse. Sohaib was declared the winner after a steward"s inquiry revealed that Light Night did interfere. Santos, who rode Funny Cide to victories in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes earlier this year, withdrew his appeal so that he would be able to ride in the September 5 opening of Belmont Park"s fall meeting. Funny Cide was denied the Triple Crown after finishing third in the Belmont Stakes.
