Bernardini retired from racing

Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Leading three-year-old Bernardini has been retired to stud duty. The runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Classic will stand as a stallion for his owner Darley Farm in Kentucky.

Bernardini lost to Invasor in last Saturday's $5 million Classic as the even- money favorite. The colt will stand for the price of $100,000.

Bernardini finished his only year of racing with six wins in eight starts and more than $3 million. Trained by Tom Albertrani, he won the Preakness, Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Also retired and sent to Darley is Henny Hughes, the beaten favorite in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. The three-year-old won three of four races in 2006 and earned $1.1 million in his two-year career.

Dan Pride, of Darley, said, "These are the supreme thoroughbreds of their generation and each bested older horses too. They are well-bred and exceptionally attractive. They were not only brilliant but they came back for more time and again. We couldn't be more thrilled than to have the chance to stand them."
