Russell Baze ties Pincay for jockey record

By: SPORTS NETWORK

San Mateoe, CA (Sports Network) - Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze has equaled another Hall of Fame rider, Laffit Pincay, Jr., for career victories. Baze recorded his 9,530th lifetime win Friday afternoon at Bay Meadows.

The 48-year-old Baze tied Pincay with Christie's Fame in the 6th race at the northern California track. It was Baze's lone win on the day in seven attempts.

"It's a great honor", Baze said when he tied Laffit Pincay, Jr. However, the native of Canada has not had an easy time trying to set a new career wins mark.

On Wednesday Baze had six mounts at Bay Meadows, but just one win.

"I thought the racing gods were stomping on me a little bit," said Baze after Wednesday's racing card. "I thought a couple of them would perform a little bit better than they did today, but I’ve been doing this long enough to know sometimes they don’t win when you think they will."

Baze is scheduled to ride seven horses on Friday as he goes after the record again.

In his 32-year riding career, Baze has earned more than $144 million with better than 42,500 mounts. Pincay, who retired in 2003, finished with more than $237 million in winnings.
