Showing Up captures Hollywood Derby

Inglewood, CA (Sports Network) - Odds-on favorite Showing Up came wide off the turn for home and powered his way to a decisive victory in Sunday's $500,000 Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park. The colt ran the 1 1/4 miles on the turf in 1:59.35.

Showing Up, ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, settled into several lengths off the pace. Kip Deville and Dark Islander battled for the lead up the backstretch.

Heading into the final turn Crested and Showing Up both moved to the leaders on the outside. The two were even coming into the stretch.

Owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson, Showing Up took command at the top of the stretch and went on to win by 2 1/2 lengths. Obrigado was second with Ivan Denisovich finishing third in the ten horse field.

Completing the order of finish in the Grade I event were Crested, Zann, Kip Deville, Frost Giant, Dark Islander (IRE), Big Mistake and Vega's Lord (GER).

Santa Anita Derby winner Brother Derek was scheduled to make his turf debut in the race, but was scratched because of a colic attack early Sunday morning in his Santa Anita stall.

"He got a little colicky this morning," said trainer Dan Hendricks. "I got a call at 4 a.m. from the night watchman. The vet was there in a half-hour to treat him."

Showing Up is trained by Barclay Tagg and recorded his seventh win of the year in nine starts. Sunday's victory was worth $300,000 to bring the three-year- old's earnings to more than $1.6 million. He did not race as a two-year-old.

"He hasn't done much wrong," said Tagg. "He's a real nice horse and has got a big personality,"

The colt was coming off a win in the Jamaica Handicap at Belmont Park and has never lost in a grass race for three-year-olds. He was sixth in the Kentucky Derby to stablemate Barbaro.

Sent off at 4-5, Showing Up returned $3.60, $2.60 and $2.20. Obrigado paid $4.80 and $3.40, and Ivan Denisovich paid $3.60 for show.
