HORSES TO WATCH
By: AMERICAN TURF CLUB
FAIR GROUNDS
BECKY RED: Overcame some traffic trouble – good schooling in debut run – to rally for second when beaten just a nose in promising, albeit belated, debut; next time.
COURT MARY: Rated and rallied but could only be second best when turning in an improved effort most recently; lightly raced 4YO fires best yet in upcoming third start of current form cycle.
GAME CALLED: Battled on pace and weakened to fifth in below par effort as the beaten favorite in his latest; 9YO gelding still an intriguing $5K-claim for trainer Tomillo.
JU JU BEAST: Returned from break and showed good early and overall interest in solid third-place finish; new face in town gets back in win column for trainer Carroll.
KETCHIKAN: Made it two straight blowout victories since useful debut run when impressive over 10 allowance opponents most recently; onward and upward.
MIGHTY MAMBO: Rallied from well back to pick up second in his latest, when placed in appropriate NW2L spot; gets the job done with similar next time.
MITHAAL: Bobbled after the break when fourth in his most recent start; son of A.P. Indy has been a bit flat of late, but could perk up off the claim by trainer Calhoun.
POKER KING: Set the pace under pressure and tired in lane to finish sixth when aggressively spotted in course debut off a layoff; moves up in a hurry.
4*SPECIAL: CURB: Battled on pace and weakened to fourth when making his first start off claim/class hike for trainer Bourgeois; barn has some options for third start of form cycle.
LONGSHOT: SMASHING BRASS: Chased the pace and weakened to third in her latest, but had previously been sharp; typically offers value and brings back a check, so excuse latest and use in exotics.
TAMPA BAY
CHATTIN CAT: Made the lead right after the start most recently in her career debut, set solid splits only to get run down late by another first time starter; graduates off that effort.
GREAT PLAINS: Has shown that he can handle the turf with a win followed up with a very good fourth place finish with allowance foes at 40-1 last out, follow right back even with a drop in class.
HOT CANARY: Did well to finish third last out, just a nose off the place spot after having to close into some very slow fractions, tab.
LO’S GAL: Closed well in the lane to finish second to the favorite who scored wire to wire; is ready to score with $12.5k NW2L claimers.
PEPPERBERRY: Came up just a half length short last out as the second choice versus $8k NW3L claimers, must respect with a similar group.
BEST BET: BONZI: Was sent right to the lead last out, set solid fractions and had plenty left in the drive to draw away scoring by two lengths in a good time, taken to repeat.
LONGSHOT: PUPPETEER: Seven year old has some backclass to call on and was running well at the end of the race last out to finish third, take him at a price with similar.
