HORSES TO WATCH
By: AMERICAN TURF CLUB
GOLDEN GATE
AUDACIOUSLY: Handles turf and dirt and has never been in better form. Followed a victory at 10-1 with a solid third at 37-1; looking good.
COOL YOUR JETS: Two decent efforts from him in two career starts—one sprinting on the dirt and one going a mile on the grass. Options are a beautiful thing.
GABRIEL’S CROWN: Coming along nicely in two attempts since the lengthy layoff. Don’t think you’ll see double-digits again, but you never know.
LAST CONQUEST: Rattled off :22.73 and :44.87 fractions while making his first start since July. Looking sharp off that second-place finish.
ROMANTIC WAGER: Fifth-place finish at 21-1 May 20 is better than it appears to be on paper. Start number 11 is going to turn out to be the lucky one.
SMUDGELEDO: Appears to have bounced out of the eighth-place effort OK, if his five-furlong bullet in :59.80 May 21 is any indication. Sitting on go.
SURF N SADDLE: Wants no part of one mile, as evidenced by his last-place effort most recently. Capable of stealing one at a price if kept at five or six furlongs.
TURN TO THE PRINCE: Seven-year-old went into hiding following a Keeneland effort in October 2005. Finally returned with a runner-up effort for Jerry Hollendorfer May 17; it makes sense.
WELFARE CADILLAC: Hit the sidelines after a well-beaten fourth-place finish last May, and returned from the shelf with a solid third at 33-1. Takes care of $20K claimers next time.
WHAT A FINALE: Like the effort she put forth in her turf debut, setting the pace and staying on to finish fourth. Headed in the right direction. YELLOW OUT: Not sure what has happened to him in his last two starts, but previously ran four good efforts in a row at solid prices. Capable of waking up; the price makes it worth your while.
4 STAR SPECIAL: IMAGINARY SAILOR: Drew off smartly to record a four-length victory in his unveiling for the always dangerous Jerry Hollendorfer. Need we say more?
LONGSHOT: TRIUMPHAL ENTRY: Has finished fourth in three out of his last four starts at odds of 32-1, 37-1 and 70-1. It’s time to start giving this guy some attention.
PIMLICO
CAMERON BE GOOD: Showed very good early speed and ultimately gave way when stretched out on turf for latest start; benefits from conditioning gained.
DIXIE MARRONE: Blasted free on early pace and stayed on gamely when second as the beaten favorite in her latest start; eligible for NW2L spots, and likely to make amends.
NAMEQUEST: Returned from November-layoff and rallied wide to be a nice second in a turf dash most recently; impossible to knock 11YO warrior.
NUIT DE CHANCE: Posted long overdue maiden score in latest, and is primed to build upon effort as third start of current form cycle is on the horizon; should offer value, too.
PROSPECTOR’S BRIDE: Chased from second and battled between stretch foes when she weakened to third in her latest; on improve since return from break, and primed for top stuff.
REASON’S RAPTURE: Shot free on the pace and then battled gamely once engaged in the lane and finished second as beaten favorite most recently; atones in a hurry with similar.
TORNADO TRACK: Lagged early, raced wide turning for home, and settled for eighth in crowded group when in with winners for the first time; benefits, and drop to CLM ranks helps further.
TRAVELIN LEROY: Was in tough from break most recently when in outside post (10) in rapid sprint field and forced to chase while wide en route to seventh-place finish; next time.
UNBRIDLED ASSAULT: Chased and faded when a disappointing fifth in a well supported start most recently; follow interesting $5K-claim for trainer Robb.
4*SPECIAL: FAMILY CAT: Chased throughout in a fair third-place effort to begin her career on May 18; should only move forward for winning Jenkins barn.
LONGSHOT: AMBUSCADE: Was bumped early, stalked, and then weakened a touch when fifth on attempted turf rebound most recently; sharper next time.
