Fort Erie faces no racing in 2009

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Fort Erie, ON (Sports Network) - Employees of Fort Erie Race Track were informed on Monday that the racetrack may not be able to conduct a racing meet in the new year. The owner and operator of the facility, Nordic Gaming Corporation, said the racing employment of 190 workers will be terminated effective Tuesday, March 31.

Nordic Gaming Corporation said the decision for the pending closure is due to the company's inability to absorb the continuing operating losses. The track has been affected by declining slot machine revenue since the opening of a casino in Niagara Falls.

The Ontario Racing Commission and the Ontario Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association have been told of the decision.

A "Save the Track" program has been underway for the last two years in an effort keep Fort Erie open. The track applied for a 78-day 2009 season, but needs assistance to remain open.
