HORSES TO WATCH

By: AMERICAN TURF CLUB

CALDER

ALMURAAD (IRE): Lightly raced veteran has done little in two starts since arriving in the U.S. off a lengthy layoff, but could show some life with a return to grass. Include at right price.

BLACK TIE SPIRIT: Two in-the-money finishes since resurfacing from a layoff. Winless in 10 chances, but clearly close to exiting the maiden ranks.

RACHEL’S DANCER: Has outrun 92-1 and 17-1 odds in two attempts since a freshening. Include in your gimmicks.

TOBIN’S RULES: Followed a victory at 11-1 with a troubled fourth-place finish. Very dangerous at the basement offering.

WICKED MOON: Finally began her career at the age of six, and her only bad race in six career attempts has come on grass. Tab off third-place finish at 19-1.

4 STAR SPECIAL: GORGEOUS MELODY: Back-to-back runaway victories since the Calder meeting began. Don’t let this Sarava filly beat you.

LONGSHOT: STOKED: Quietly showing improvement in two attempts since a freshening, including a fifth-place finish at 150-1. Not impossible.

GOLDEN GATE

CRUZIN TOPLESS: Switch to grass and drop in class brought out a good third-place finish from this filly. Working bullets since.

DANNY JAMES: On the board in two attempts since sitting on the shelf for 12 months, including a head defeat most recently. Worth the short price.

DAT’S DREAM: Three efforts under his belt since clearing his n3L condition, and finally made an impact in latest, completing the exacta at 22-1. On his way.

FORMALLY YOURS: First or second in six straight this year before switching to grass in latest. Think it would be wise to return this filly to the all-weather.

IRISH ROVER: Is probably better on grass, and needed one off August layoff. Could be live at a price versus similar on the turf.

OCEAN LAD: Right there in three attempts since getting stretched to a mile with a layoff in between. Won’t remain a maiden much longer.

REALLY A DUTCHESS: Second-best against $8k maiden claimers in early May, and has been training up a storm since. Goes one better.

SANFIRE: Pressed a hot pace and reported home third after disappearing following a debut fourth in July. From the Steven Miyadi barn.

4 STAR SPECIAL: HIDDEN ROMANCE: Has posted two second-place finishes and a win since changing hands for $16k. Speedy filly handles both courses too; very dangerous.

LONGSHOT: LASER LOGIC: Plenty of chances, but liked how he responded from a little down time and switch to grass with a third-place finish at 31-1.  Deserves another shot.
