Garrett Gomez injured at Churchill Downs

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Veteran jockey Garrett Gomez was injured during the sixth race Thursday afternoon at Churchill Downs. The former champion rider was thrown from his mount when the horse broke down on the turf course.

Gomez was board three-year-old filly Indy Bouquet when she fell on the far turn in the one-mile race for maidens. The filly apparently rolled on Gomez.

Indy Bouquet, owned by WinStar Farm and trained by Shannon Ritter, was euthanized because of the injuries she sustained. Gomez was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for precautionary purposes.

Gomez, a two-time Eclipse Award winner, is named on nine mounts for this week's Breeders' Cup races. He is slated to ride Malibu Prayer in Friday's $2 million Ladies' Classic and Blame in Saturday's $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.
