Uncle Mo has solid workout for Kentucky Derby

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Former Kentucky Derby favorite Uncle Mo returned to training Tuesday morning at Churchill Downs. The colt, trained by Todd Pletcher, put in a five-furlong workout over a sloppy track.

"Uncle Mo worked very well," Pletcher said on the Kentucky Derby website. "He looked like he handled the surface very well. The time was sort of in the range of what we were looking for. He came back very well."

Owned by Mike Repole, Uncle Mo covered the five-furlongs in 1:01.80 and galloped out six-furlongs in 1:15.60 with John Velazquez in the saddle.

"I think this morning's work was an indication he was in good form," Pletcher noted. "I was particularly pleased with the way he finished his work. He didn't need to be asked at all. When he was pulling up on the backside a couple of gallopers went by him and he grabbed the bridle again. He seemed really, really good this morning."

In the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racecourse the three-year-old finished third as the 1-10 favorite in the 10 horse field after having the lead entering the stretch. It was later determined that he had an infection of his gastrointestinal system.

Uncle Mo was undefeated in four career starts going into the Wood Memorial. As a two-year-old he won the Champagne Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
