Thoroughbred owner Jess Jackson dies

Geyersville, CA (Sports Network) - Thoroughbred racehorse owner and winemaker Jess Jackson died Thursday at his home in California. He was 81 years old.

A statement from Jackson Family Wines said Jackson died from complications of cancer.

Jackson's Stonestreet Stables owned Curlin and Rachel Alexandra, both Horse of the Year winners.

Curlin, the 2007 Preakness Stakes winner, captured the Horse of the Year award in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, Rachel Alexandra became the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness on her way to Horse of the Year honors.

Jackson is survived by his wife, Barbara Banke, five children and two grandchildren.
