Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Former Santa Anita Derby winner Sidney's Candy has been sold and will be trained by Todd Pletcher. The four-year-old will race for a partnership headed by WinStar Farm where he will stand when he enters stud service.
"It's an exciting time when you can add a horse like Sidney's Candy to the racing stable, and eventually to the WinStar stallion roster," said Elliott Walden, WinStar President and Racing Manager. "He's one of the truly brilliant horses in racing when you consider what he's accomplished. Not many horses of this generation have his versatility or speed. He's truly an impressive horse and we feel fortunate to have him."
Previously owned by his breeders Jenny Craig and her late husband Sidney Craig, Sidney's Candy was trained by John Sadler to six wins in 13 starts for $953,560.
As a three-year-old in 2010 he won the San Vicente and San Felipe Stakes before capturing the Santa Anita Derby. In the 136th Kentucky Derby he was the 5-1 second choice in the morning-line and started from post 20. However, he finished 17th after helping set the pace.
Later in his 2010 season Sidney's Candy won the La Jolla Handicap on the turf and Sir Beaufort Stakes. The colt finished sixth in last year's Breeders' Cup Mile to champion Goldikova.
This year he was second in both the American and Mervyn LeRoy Handicaps.
