Pacific Classic ahead for two

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Del Mar, CA (Sports Network) - Newly crowned San Diego Handicap winner Tres Borrachos and highly regarded Twirling Candy are both on track for the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on August 28.

Trained by Marty Jones, Tres Borrachos won for the first time Saturday since May 25, 2009. The six-year-old also has a guaranteed starting spot in this year's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs.

"I watched the replay and Rafael (Bejarano) rode a great race," Jones said. "I was impressed with how patient he was and the horse really seemed to take to that change in style. We'll keep watching him and see. If he's doing well, we'll definitely consider the Pacific Classic."

Tres Borrachos went from running near the lead to coming from off the pace to capture the San Diego Handicap and snap a 13-race losing streak. The six-year- old was 8-1 in the eight-horse field.

Trainer John Sadler had Californian winner Twirling Candy on the track Sunday morning. The four-year-old worked five-furlongs in :59 3/5 seconds with Joel Rosario riding.

"The work was sharp, and the plan is we're onwards and upwards for the Pacific Classic," Sadler said.

Twirling Candy is the winner of seven of 10 career starts for $744,900.
