Cape Blanco retired with injury

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Elmont, NY (Sports Network) - Stakes winning turf runner Cape Blanco has been retired due to an injury.

The four-year-old colt suffered the injury during the running of Saturday's Turf Classic Invitational at Belmont Park, which he won.

A statement from trainer Aidan O'Brien said Cape Blanco had a slab fracture of his knee.

Cape Blanco was based in Europe but made three winning trips to America this year. He won the Man o'War at Belmont Park in July and the following month flew into the country to capture the Arlington Million at Arlington Park. The Irish-bred colt edged Dean's Kitten to win the Turf Classic and stamp himself as the probable favorite for the Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs on November 5.

The colt won nine of 15 career starts for $3,855,665. This year he earned $1,736,000 in his three U.S. starts.
