HORSES TO WATCH

By: AMERICAN TURF CLUB

PHILADELPHIA (PARX RACING)

SHE WEARS IT WELL: Was claimed three back for $12.5k NW4L claimers, moved up to face $16k claimers two back, showed high early speed but tired in the lane to finish a well beaten 8th, dropped back down into NW4L $7.5k claimers, showed good early speed into the lane and tired to finish fourth, is at the right level and must be followed right back at a better price.

OVERNIGHT FLING: Shipped in from Laurel for her last start, her first in maiden claiming company, got away in sixth early on and then finished up well for fourth at 55-1 just missing the show spot late, fits at this level so follow with similar.

COLLEGE BOUND: Improving three year old was claimed three back for $10k, finished third against $16k claimers and then moved up to allowance company last out finishing a clear second behind the odds-on winner at 21-1, offers value right back with similar.

IMAGINE NOW: Four year old filly has had a rough patch over the last two years garnering just one victory over the last 24 starts in 2010-11, was outrun some early on last out but did close some ground in the lane to finish third at 35-1; price play.

KEY TO THE EMPIRE: Well bred runner was 0 for his first 21 starts but got the job done in start 22 against maiden $18k claimers and then followed that up with another solid win over NW2L $7.5k claimers, was claimed by shrewd barn and can continue his winning ways.

BEST BET: THE COGNAC KID: Four year old gelding had not shot last out at 6-1 racing behind some very moderate early fractions for this class and checked in sixth and last, has a good closing kick but needs some help up front, follow back at a better price.

LONGSHOT: TROYSTONE: Three year old finished a decent fourth two back at 54-1 and then faced off against a pretty solid maiden $12.5k claiming field last out finishing fifth at 31-1 about 12 lengths off the winner after showing more early speed; the value is there and is a must use in all exotics.

LAUREL

ELEGANT PEACE: Four year old filly has only one published workout heading into her debut against $14k maiden claimers, had the services of a top jockey, had no early speed racing in 8th, swung five wide into the lane and finished up well for fourth at 13-1; should move forward off that effort and fits with similar.

MONEY FOR LOVE: Took a drop out of starter allowance company into a time restricted claiming event, was battling for the early lead outside another rival, took over that lead past the ¾ mark but tired late to finish third at 20-1; fits at this level and should offer some value right back.

CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN: Broke a step slow from the gate last out when breaking from the rail post, recovered quickly and got into a contending spot, saved ground into the lane and finished up well for second, sharp runner should find the winners’ circle soon.

LAWYER DAVE: Well bred runner showed a much improved effort last out when making his second start, stretching out for the first time, took over the lead into the lane but was nailed late, should only get better the further they go, stay close.

NINTH CLIENT: Five year old gelding raced three wide on both turns, gained a short lead midway on the far turn, was overtaken but then dug in to battle back settling for second late; all set now.

BEST BET: MISTER MEEHAN: Crushed maidens while sprinting over the turf three back, didn’t run badly when trying winners two back over the slop and then showed sharp early speed last out stayed on well to finish fourth about two lengths off the winner at 44-1; ready to pop next out at long odds.

LONGSHOT: YANKEE SWEETHEART: Five year old mare was sent off at 24-1 last out in a six horse field, got away in third chasing the early pace, moved even wider to challenge for the lead while in between horses and then continued on gamely to finish a close-up third, likes this track and may be rounding back to form.
