Full field of 20 to start in 138th Kentucky Derby

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - A total of 21 horses have been entered for the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby, but only 20 will eventually go to the post on Saturday.

My Adonis became the first also-eligible in the storied history of the race and is the first alternate if there is a scratch by Friday at 9 a.m. (et) among the first 20.

Only 20 horses are allowed to enter the race. Previously, if one scratched after the post positions were drawn, the field was simply reduced.

Post positions for the first leg of the Triple Crown will be drawn at 5 p.m. (et) on Wednesday.

Track oddsmaker Mike Battaglia has made Arkansas Derby winner Bodemeister the preliminary favorite at 4-1. That may change after the post positions are drawn.

Battaglia has put Union Rags in as the 9-2 second pick. Other three-year-olds who are expected to draw large support are Blue Grass winner Dullahan, Wood Memorial champ Gemologist and Santa Anita Derby winner I'll Have Another.

Here are the 21 horses entered for Saturday's Run for the Roses: Hansen, Daddy Long Legs, Union Rags, Dullahan, Creative Cause, Gemologist, Sabercat, Take Charge Indy, Bodemeister, I'll Have Another, Daddy Nose Best, Liaison, Alpha, Prospective, Trinniberg, Done Talking, Went the Day Well, Rousing Sermon, El Padrino, Optimizer, My Adonis.
