Vote: Secretariat's Preakness time is a record

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Secretariat now holds a record in each of the three Triple Crown races after a vote Tuesday changed the horse's time for the 1973 Preakness Stakes.

The unanimous 7-0 vote by the Maryland Racing Commission reduced the horse's time in the race from 1:54 2/5 to 1:53 for the 1 3/16 miles, placing it under the previous record of 1:53 2/5 set by Tank's Prospect in 1985 and matched by Louis Quatorze in 1996 and Curlin in 2007.

Secretariat won the 1973 Triple Crown and already held record times for the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.

A request had been made to the Maryland Racing Commission from Secretariat's owner, Penny Chenery, and Maryland Jockey Club president Thomas Chuckas to use the latest technology to offer a corrected time for the race.

The commission heard testimony Tuesday for more than two hours before making its decision to change the time.
