Paynter shows improvement

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Saratoga Springs, NY (Sports Network) - Haskell Invitational winner Paynter showed improvement Wednesday morning one day after spiking a fever. The colt is scheduled to make his next start in the 143rd Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 25.

Trainer Bob Baffert tweeted Wednesday, "Paynter much improved today. Very good sign." This came following Tuesday's tweet that the three-year-old had a "slight temp this morning so could not ship home. Will van to Saratoga by weekend to prepare for Travers."

Paynter, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, won the Haskell at Monmouth Park by almost four lengths over another California horse, Nonios. Owned by Zayat Stables, Paynter won the first stakes of his career and gave his trainer the sixth Haskell victory in his Hall of Fame career.
