Hansen injured, retirement near

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Saratoga Springs, NY (Sports Network) - Champion colt Hansen has an injured leg and will miss Saturday's Travers Stakes with retirement probable.

Hansen, the 2011 champion two-year-old colt, has a tear of a tendon in his left front leg. Trainer Mike Maker posted the news on his website.

Co-owner Kendall Hansen indicated that retirement was likely.

The winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Hansen worked five furlongs in 1:02.80 on Saturday morning at the Trackside Training Center in Louisville in preparation for the Travers.

Hansen has five wins in nine career starts for $1.8 million. This year, he won the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct between second-place results in the Holy Bull and Blue Grass Stakes. In addition, he won the Iowa Derby by 10 lengths and finished fourth in the West Virginia Derby as the 3-5 favorite.

The announcement of Hansen's injury comes one day following the retirement of Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes runner-up Bodemeister, who has an injured left shoulder.
