Power Broker and Steeler are first under new Derby points system

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - The first two races in the new points-based "Road to the Kentucky Derby" series are in the books, giving a pair of 2-year- olds the early lead. The new system replaces the use of graded stakes earnings as the criteria for the 20 Kentucky Derby starters.

Picking up the first wins were Power Broker and Steeler in the FrontRunner and Royal Lodge Stakes, respectively. Each winner gained 10 points for their victories

Points were awarded to the top four finishers in each race on a 10-4-2-1 scale.

Coming in second through fourth in the FrontRunner at Santa Anita were Know More, Capo Bastone and Carving. In the Royal Lodge at England's Newmarket, the next three finishers after Steeler were Artigiano, Al Waab and Birdman.

The 139th Kentucky Derby will held on Saturday, May 4.
