Donn Handicap work for Take Charge Indy

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Hallandale Beach, FL (Sports Network) - Take Charge Indy, 2012 Florida Derby winner, had his first workout Friday morning leading to the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park. The colt worked three-furlongs at Palm Meadows Training Center.

"He's right on schedule," said trainer Patrick Byrne. "He went real well and we'll come back and work again in eight or nine days."

Take Charge Indy, owned by Chuck and Maribeth Sandford, covered the three- furlongs in 36 4/5 seconds in his initial workout for the 1 1/8-mile Donn Handicap which will be run on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Ridden by Calvin Borel, the soon-to-be 4-year-old finished second in the Clark Handicap on Nov. 23 to Shackleford at Churchill Downs. It was his second start since finishing 19th in the Kentucky Derby.

"He missed all of the summer due to the injury he suffered in the Kentucky Derby. But he showed that he's back and he's put two solid races back-to- back," Byrne said.

The colt was third in the Fayette Stakes at Keeneland in October for his first start since the Run for the Roses.

Take Charge Indy will eventually stand at WinStar Farm and has banked $821,824 with two wins in nine career starts.
