Donn Handicap features 10 older runners

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Hallandale Beach, FL (Sports Network) - A solid field of 10 older thoroughbreds will compete in Saturday's 57th Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park. The 1 1/8-mile $500,000 stakes has a post-time of 5:32 p.m. (ET).

Starting from post 2 will be Flat Out, the winner of the last two editions of the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Trained by Bill Mott, the 7-year-old will be ridden by Joel Rosario for the third straight race.

Flat Out was third behind Fort Larned in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic, a race he finished fifth in 2011 as the 7-2 favorite. The Gold Cup was his only win of 2012 to go along with a second in the Monmouth Cup and a third in the Whitney Invitational.

Owned by Preston Stable, Flat Out has banked more than $2.5 million with six wins in 20 career starts.

Take Charge Indy, last year's Florida Derby champ, has drawn post 8 with jockey John Velazquez riding for trainer Patrick Byrne and WinStar Farm.

"He's (Take Charge Indy) push-button. If somebody else wants the lead they can have it. We'll just sit off it," Byrne said. "He's been doing super. We're looking forward to running him. It looks like a very tough race. They're coming out of the woodwork for this race."

The 4-year-old colt followed his Florida Derby win with a disappointing 19th in the Kentucky Derby. After a five month break he was third in the Fayette at Keeneland and second to Shackleford in the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs.

"We're going to get our horse started and see where he fits in the handicap division. All we can do is worry about our guy, and we're ecstatic with him," Byrne said. "We're eager to get started. We look forward to having a nice year with him."

Take Charge Indy has won two of nine lifetime starts for $821,824.

Here is the field for the Donn in post position order: Bourbon Courage, Javier Castellano; Flat Out, Joel Rosario; Fast Falcon, Jose Lezcano; Graydar, Edgar Prado; Ultimate Eagle, Martin Pedroza; Ducduc, Junior Alvarez; Csaba, Luis Saez; Take Charge Indy, John Velazquez; Pool Play, Miguel Mena and Citrus Kid, Joe Rocco Jr.
