Mutuel field favored in first Derby Future Wager

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - The first Kentucky Derby Future Wager of 2013 gets underway Friday at noon, with 24 betting interests available for interested bettors. The morning line favorite is the mutuel field of "All Others" -- 3-year-old horses not listed individually.

The Future Wager will conclude at Sunday 6 p.m. (ET) after its opening two days earlier. The 139th Kentucky Derby will be conducted on Saturday, May 4 at Churchill Downs.

The mutuel field has been made the 9-5 favorite among the 24 interests, with Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Shanghai Bobby and CashCall Futurity champ Violence sharing the second spot at 12-1. Both colts are trained by Todd Pletcher.

"It's normal and logical for 'All Others' to be favored in the opening pool of the Derby Future Wager, but it's rare for me to set its morning line odds so low," said track oddsmaker Mike Battaglia. "No individual horse has really grabbed the attention of Derby fans, and while several lightly-raced horses have been impressive, they are question marks in terms of experience. It will be fun to shop for attractive prices on individual horses, but most fans figure to find their way back to the mutuel field before the pool closes."

Four horses are opening at 15-1 in the early betting, led by Robert B. Lewis Stakes winner Flashback. He is joined by Holy Bull Stakes champ Itsmyluckyday, highly regarded Overanalyze and recent allowance winner Verrazano.

The second Future Wager will be conducted March 1-3, with the third and final pool held March 22-24.
