San Vicente Stakes attracts six
By: SPORTS NETWORK
Arcadia, CA (Sports Network) - Six 3-year-olds have been entered for Sunday's $150,000 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita Park. The seven-furlong stakes has a post-time of 6:36 p.m. (ET).
Topping the field of five colts and one gelding is recent winner Treasury Bill. Owned by Gary and Mary West Stables, the chestnut colt will break from the outside post with Joe Talamo in the saddle again.
"He's doing well, but (going) seven-eighths of a mile against talented maiden winners, it's just not his ball game," trainer Ron Ellis said of Treasury Bill. "We're just trying to get untracked for some of the bigger Derby preps. This will get another race under his belt, give him a little more experience and we'll move on to two turns.
"We're on an upward trajectory. We just want to keep him doing that. We've still got a few months to go before the big ones. This won't be a big test for him because it's only around one turn, but his next race, when he runs in March, will be."
Treasury Bill broke his maiden at Santa Anita at 6 1/2-furlongs on Jan. 27 after finishing third in his debut on Nov. 9 at Hollywood Park.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert helped fill the field with three runners taking the three inside posts. Starting from the rail will be Belvin and Rafael Bejarano, next is Shakin It Up with David Flores and in post 3 will be War Academy and jockey Martin Garcia. All three colts are starting their 2013 seasons on Sunday.
"Belvin and Shakin It Up broke their maidens here," Baffert said. "The horses haven't run in a while but they're all doing well and they've worked well. There weren't any allowance races, so I went here."
Trainer Doug O'Neill will start Mudflats in the San Vicente. The gray gelding has drawn post 5 with Edwin Maldonado riding. Mudflats was seventh in the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct on Jan. 5 and will be making his first start outside of New York on Sunday.
Caballo Del Cielo completes the field and will break from post 4 with jockey Corey Nakatani. The colt is trained by Steve Asmussen for owner Jerry Durant.
Here is the field in post position order for the San Vicente: Belvin, Rafael Bejarano; Shakin It Up, David Flores; War Academy, Martin Garcia; Caballo Del Cielo, Corey Nakatani; Mudflats, Edwin Maldonado and Treasury Bill, Joe Talamo.
