Shanghai Bobby and Goldencents lead under new Derby points system

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Saturday's Fountain of Youth and Risen Star Stakes mark the initial two races in the "Championship Series" part of the new "Road to the Kentucky Derby" points system. The 19-race "Prep Season" finished on Presidents' Day with the Southwest Stakes.
Leading the Top 20 point earners are Eclipse Award winner Shanghai Bobby and Sham Stakes winner Goldencents, each with 24 points. In third with 11 points is Lecomte Stakes champ Oxbow followed by 11 3-year-olds with 10 points apiece.
This Saturday's two stakes will be worth 50 points to each winner and 20 to the runner-up, 10 to third and 5 to fourth. The "Championship Series" is made up of 17 races.
Early estimates by Churchill Downs officials are that between 30 and 40 points will be needed to make the Kentucky Derby field of 20.
The 139th Kentucky Derby will held on Saturday, May 4.
