Animal Kingdom fades in Queen Anne Stakes
By: SPORTS NETWORK
Ascot, England (Sports Network) - Animal Kingdom came up short in an attempt to add the Queen Anne Stakes title to his 2011 Kentucky Derby win and Dubai World Cup championship from earlier this year. As the 5-4 favorite in the final start of his career, Animal Kingdom held a share of third early in the straight-ahead, 1-mile race on the turf at Royal Ascot. With Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez aboard, the five-year-old faded about halfway through the race and finished 11th in the 13-horse field. Animal Kingdom completed his career with five wins and five seconds in 12 career starts. Declaration of War came from off the pace to win the race, finishing in a time of 1:38.48 for his sixth win in eight career starts. Aljamaaheer was three- quarters of a length behind in second, followed by Gregorian.
