Jim Dandy next up for Palace Malice

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Saratoga Springs, NY (Sports Network) - Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice is getting ready to return to racing in the $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes on July 27 at Saratoga.

The 3-year-old colt is now training in Saratoga and put in a five-furlong workout Sunday morning when he was clocked in 1:00 4/5. It was the colt's third workout since capturing the 145th Belmont Stakes on June 8 with Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.

"He worked a half-mile by himself on Sunday, going in a spritely 49:2, and looked good doing it," said Cot Campbell, Dogwood Stables president. "Actually, (trainer) Todd Pletcher put him back in work shortly after the Belmont, or he was going to tear the barn down.

"The big objective is the Midsummer Derby - the $1 million Grade I Travers Stakes - on August 24. It is a mile and a quarter, and the Jim Dandy is a mile and an eighth.

"In a perfect world after Saratoga, we would see one of the big races at Belmont in the fall, and then on to the Breeders' Cup Championships in California at Santa Anita on November 2."

Palace Malice has two wins in eight lifetime starts for $871,135.
