Injury forces Take Charge Indy retirement

Nicholasville, KY (Sports Network) - Former Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy has been retired after suffering an injury Sunday at Monmouth Park.

The 4-year-old colt, with Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens riding, broke a bone in his left front leg during the running of the Monmouth Cup.

"I was on the lead with a big smile on my face. He was cruising. The only question was how much would he win by," said Stevens

Take Charge Indy was transported to Hogan Equine in central New Jersey where surgery was performed Monday morning by Dr. Patty Hogan.

"The surgery went very well. He's a super patient," Dr. Hogan said.

Owned by WinStar Farm, Take Charge Indy earned $1,103,496 in 14 career starts with three wins, four seconds and two thirds.

As a 3-year-old trained by Patrick Byrne, the colt finished 19th in the Kentucky Derby after his Florida Derby victory. He came back in the fall with a third in the Fayette Stakes and was runner-up in the Carter Handicap.

This year, he was third in the Donn Handicap, second in the Skip Away Stakes, won the Alysheba Stakes and was sixth in the Stephen Foster Handicap.

Take Charge Indy will stand at WinStar Farm for the 2014 breeding season.
