Trained by Bob Baffert, Paynter had a seven-furlong workout in 1:26.40 over Del Mar's all-weather track. The colt galloped out a mile in 1:38.

"Paynter worked awesome ... Galloped very strong," owner Ahmed Zayat tweeted.

The 4-year-old was the 3-5 favorite in the San Diego where dropped a half- length decision to Kettle Corn. It was his first stakes start since winning the Haskell at Monmouth Park in July, 2012.

Paynter has won half of his eight career starts with three seconds for $1,029,424.

Another Baffert horse, Liaison, had a five-furlong workout for Sunday's Pacific Classic. The Arnold Zetcher 4-year-old went a flat minute on Del Mar's main track.
