Successful Dan returns to workout mode
By: SPORTS NETWORK
Saratoga Springs, NY (Sports Network) - Successful Dan, runner-up in the Whitney Handicap, put in his second workout on Tuesday since his three- quarter length loss in the 1 1/8-mile race at Saratoga Race Course. Trained by Charles LoPresti for owner Morton Fink, Successful Dan worked five furlongs over Saratoga's main track in 1:10.32. The 7-year-old gelding, a stablemate of Horse of the Year Wise Dan, is being prepped for the Woodward at Saratoga on Saturday, Aug. 31. "Every one of my horses is doing really good. I have no complaints about any of them," LoPresti said Monday. "They're all right on target." Successful Dan is the winner of eight of 14 career starts for $923,154. He won the Ben Ali early this year at Keeneland, but was a distant fourth in the Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs to Fort Larned. Fort Larned also worked Tuesday at Saratoga covering five furlongs in 1:01.06. Meanwhile, LoPresti and Fink have yet to decide on Wise Dan's next start. "I'm not sure what we're going to do with him yet," the trainer said. "He might go to Woodbine, he might go to Kentucky. I might leave him here until I go home. He's doing good up here and there's no reason to take him home. I probably won't work him on the turf. I may just give him a little easy workout on the dirt like I did before the Fourstardave. He's come out of the race really good, as you can see." Last year after winning the Fourstardave, Wise Dan reeled off victories in the Shadwell Mile and Woodbine Mile as well as the Breeders' Cup Mile. Undefeated in four starts this year, the 6-year-old gelding has won 17 of 24 career starts for $4,464,070. Wise Dan won the Firecracker Handicap at Churchill Downs on June 29. He began 2013 with wins in the Maker's 46 Mile and Woodford Reserve Turf Classic and is working on an eight-race win streak.
