Dullahan dies from colic complications

Lexington, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Former Pacific Classic winner Dullahan passed away early Sunday morning due to complications of colic. The 4-year-old colt had undergone surgery Saturday night.

Owner Donegal Racing posted the following on its Twitter account Sunday morning.

"We report with heavy hearts that Dullahan died from colic complications at 1 a.m. last night. God bless the horse that gave us so much joy."

Dale Romans, who trained the colt, had the following posted on his stable's website.

"It is with deep regret that we share the news of the sudden passing of Donegal Racing's Dullahan. He was a true champion on the track and in our hearts. He will be missed by all of us at Romans Racing. Our sincere condolences are with his connections at this sad time."

Dullahan was retired from racing last Monday with a tendon injury. He was stabled at WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky.

Dullahan won just three races in 18 career starts, with each win coming in a stakes race. As a 2-year-old he won the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland and returned to the track the following spring to capture the Blue Grass Stakes.

After a third-place finish in the 138th Kentucky Derby, Dullahan finished seventh in the Belmont Stakes. He then finished fifth in the Haskell Invitational before recording his biggest and last victory in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar over Game On Dude.

The colt failed to reach the winner's circle in his final six starts, including an eighth in this year's Pacific Classic. He finished his career with $1,735,901.
