Kentucky Derby winner Orb retired to Claiborne Farm

Paris, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Kentucky Derby winner Orb has been retired from racing and will stand as a stallion at Claiborne Farm.

"We are very excited and pleased to announce Orb has been retired to stud at Claiborne Farm!," the farm posted on its Twitter page.

Orb, owned by Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable, won the 139th Kentucky Derby by 2 1/2 lengths as the 5-1 favorite on May 4, but was unable to become the first Triple Crown champ since 1978 when he finished fourth in the Preakness Stakes and third in the Belmont Stakes.

Trained by Shug McGaughey, the colt came into the Run for the Roses off wins in the Fountain of Youth Stakes and Florida Derby. Following the Triple Crown series, he was third in the Travers and eighth in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Orb closes his racing career with five wins in 12 starts and $2,612,516.
