Velazquez injured during Breeders' Cup

Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez was injured Saturday during the 30th Breeders' Cup and was taken to a hospital for surgery. The 41-year-old rider was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena to have his spleen removed. He was injured during the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, the first championship race of the day. Velazquez was aboard Secret Compass in the Juvenile Fillies when she broke down during the race. The 2-year-old filly was vanned off the track and was euthanized. Earlier this year, Velazquez suffered minor fractures when his mount fell during a race at Aqueduct.
