By: SPORTS NETWORK

Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - New Year's Day, winner of the 2013 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, has been retired with an injury. Trainer Bob Baffert made the announcement Thursday.

Owned by Gary and Mary West, New Year's Day has a non-displaced chip of the sesamoid bone in his left hind leg. Gary West informed Baffert of the decision to retire the 2-year-old on Wednesday.

In his only workout since winning the Juvenile, New Year's Day worked three furlongs at Santa Anita in 37 4/5 seconds.

New Year's Day won the Juvenile on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita as a 10-1 longshot over 5-2 favorite Havana. The colt rallied down the stretch in the 1 1/16- mile race to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

In his three-race career, New Year's Day won twice and earned $1,154,000.
