California Chrome puts in workout for Kentucky Derby

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Leading 3-year-old California Chrome had a half-mile workout Saturday morning at his home track Los Alamitos.

The Santa Anita Derby winner worked the four furlongs in 47 4/5 seconds with his regular jockey Victor Espinoza.

"Victor said he went great," trainer Art Sherman said. "The track was immaculate. He'll have his final workout next Saturday and ship early Monday morning (April 28) for Kentucky. There were some 30 people here today to see him work. He galloped out (five furlongs) in 1:01. Everything went great."

Expected to go off as the favorite in the Run for the Roses, California Chrome is undefeated in three starts this year. He won the California Cup Derby at Santa Anita on Jan. 25 and the San Felipe Stakes on March 8 before claiming the Santa Anita Derby on April 5. This year he has earned $920,000.
