Monmouth's Haskell targeted for Wildcat Red

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Oceanport, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Fountain of Youth Stakes winner Wildcat Red is back in training with the $1 million Haskell Invitational a likely target this summer at Monmouth Park.

Trained by Jose Garoffalo, Wildcat Red is currently at Gulfstream Park after his disappointing 18th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby on May 3. During the Run for the Roses the 3-year-old colt suffered a cut in his right front leg.

"It was above the right ankle - about an inch long. It wasn't too deep, but enough to take care of it. He had other scratches and bruises everywhere," said Garoffalo. "He's doing good. He'll breeze probably Saturday - an easy half-mile, a routine breeze. He's been galloping good. There are no issues with the horse after the race.

"If the horse goes good, maybe we'll find a race for him in the middle of June or the third week in June as a prep for the Haskell (July 27)."

Wildcat Red, owned by Honors Stable Corp., won the Hutcheson Stakes and finished second in the Florida Derby to Constitution. The colt has won half of his eight career starts for $690,850.
