Beholder recovering from injury

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Arcadia, CA (Sports Network) - Two-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder is back in her Santa Anita home following last week's fourth-place finish in the Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park.

Trained by Richard Mandella, the 4-year-old filly suffered a cut on her left hind pastern during the 1 1/16-mile Phipps won by Close Hatches.

"So far it looks like it's healing well," the Hall of Fame trainer said. "We've not had any infection, which is the important thing. It's questionable whether she would make the Del Mar meet."

Beholder was the even-money favorite for the Phipps which was on the Belmont Stakes card.

Owned by Spendthrift Farm, Beholder won the Santa Lucia Stakes at Santa Anita on April 20 in her seasonal debut, more than four months after winning the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Beholder, who won Eclipse Awards as 2012 champion 2-year-old and 2013 champion 3-year-old filly, has won nine of 14 career starts for more than $3.1 million.
