Beholder close to resuming training

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Two-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder is getting closer to resuming training after being injured in the Ogden Phipps Stakes on June 7 at Belmont Park.

Trained by Richard Mandella, the 4-year-old filly suffered a cut on her left hind pastern during the 1 1/16-mile Phipps when she finished fourth to Close Hatches as the even-money favorite.

"We're waiting for one spot to close in and she'll be able to train. It might be another week. We're way ahead of the game. When it happened, I thought she might be out two months," Mandella said.

Owned by Spendthrift Farm, Beholder won the Santa Lucia Stakes at Santa Anita on April 20 in her seasonal debut, more than four months after winning the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Beholder won Eclipse Awards as 2012 champion 2-year-old and 2013 champion 3-year-old filly. She has won nine of 14 career starts for more than $3.1 million.
