Large field entered for Suburban Handicap

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Elmont, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - A sizable field of 11 older thoroughbreds has been entered for Saturday's $500,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.

Topping the entries for the 1 1/4-mile stakes is Last Gunfighter, winner of last year's Pimlico Special and Hawthorne Gold Cup. The 5-year-old, trained by Chad Brown for John Gunther, will start from post 5 with Javier Castellano again riding.

Last Gunfighter began his 2014 campaign on May 31 by winning the Mountainview Handicap at Penn National as the 7-10 favorite. He had closed 2013 by claiming the Gold Cup at Hawthorne after finishing fifth in both the Breeders' Cup Classic and Jockey Club Gold Cup.

With nine wins in 16 career starts, Last Gunfighter has earned $1,140,205.

Norumbega and Micromanage, the first two under the wire in the Brooklyn Handicap, will meet up again in the Suburban. Norumbega will be ridden by Joel Rosario from post 4 and Micromanage will break from the rail with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez.

Trained by Shug McGaughey, Norumbega defeated Micromanage on June 7 at Belmont by a neck in the 1 1/2-mile Brooklyn on Belmont Stakes Day. A gray 4-year-old, Norumbega is owned by Stuart Janney III and has banked $501,945 with four wins from 13 lifetime starts.

Micromanage, trained by Todd Pletcher for Repole Stable, has won four of 16 career starts for $546,881.

Here is the field for the Suburban from the rail out: Micromanage, John Velazquez; Ever Rider, Luis Saez; Zivo, Jose Lezcano; Norumbega, Joel Rosario; Last Gunfighter, Javier Castellano; Romansh, Jose Ortiz; Prayer for Relief, Corey Nakatani; Stormin Monarcho, Corey Lanerie; Vyjack, Irad Ortiz Jr.; Mylute, Rajiv Maragh and Moreno, Junior Alvarado.

Post time for the Suburban will be approximately 5:08 p.m. ET.
