Oaklawn opening delayed a week due to cold

Hot Springs, AR (SportsNetwork.com) - The extreme cold in Arkansas has already taken a toll on Oaklawn Park forcing the track to delay its opening a week.

The historic track had been scheduled to begin its 2015 season Friday, Jan. 9 but will open, instead, Thursday, Jan. 15.

"Our track maintenance crews worked to maintain the racing surface all night," said Director of Racing David Longinotti on Thursday. "It became clear shortly after sunrise that we were not going to be able to hold it. The safety of the horses and riders is always our first concern and this weather is just not conductive for racing. We look forward to kicking off things next week."

The decision to postpone the opening was made early Thursday morning following a meeting between track management and horsemen representatives.
