War Story and Mr. Z have Wednesday workouts at Churchill Downs

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Kentucky Derby probables War Story and Mr. Z each had five-furlong workouts Wednesday at Churchill Downs.

War Story, trained by Tom Amoss, went 1:02 with jockey Dylan Davis for the five furlongs and galloped out six furlongs in 1:15.60.

"That was a typical work for him," Amoss said. "He definitely knows the difference between practice and a race. To say that he is a lazy work horse is accurate."

Owned by Loooch Racing Stables, Glenn Ellis and Christopher Dunn, War Story, 14th with 44 points, completed his Kentucky Derby prep schedule with a third-place finish behind International Star in the Louisiana Derby on March 28. The gelding will have jockey Joe Talamo for the Kentucky Derby.

Mr. Z, trained by D. Wayne Lukas, went the five furlongs Wednesday in 1:01 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:15.60.with exercise rider Edvin Vargas.

"I thought it was fine," Lukas said. "He is probably the most seasoned horse in the race and didn't need to do too much. Plus, he has an affinity for this race track."

Owned by Zayat Stables, Mr. Z was third in the Arkansas Derby to American Pharoah on April 11. Ramon Vazquez will ride Mr. Z, 17th with 34 points, in the Run for the Roses.

Out at Santa Anita, Ocho Ocho Ocho worked six furlongs in 1:13.60 over a fast track. Owned by D P Racing and trained by Jim Cassidy, the colt is 18th on the points leaderboard and will be ridden by Kent Desormeaux in the Kentucky Derby on May 2.
