Saint Liam betters Roses in May at Gulfstream

By: SPORTS NETWORK

Hallandale, FL (Sports Network) - Clark Handicap winner Saint Liam made

his first start of the year a winning one with a front-running win in the

 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park.

Roses in May finished second followed by Eddington, Seek Gold, Pies

 Prospect and Wishingitwas.

The winning time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:48.43.

Ridden by Edgar Prado, Saint Liam dueled with the favorite Roses in May

around the clubhouse turn for the lead. Saint Liam took a short lead

midway up the backstretch. Roses in May then pressed the pace from the

 inside until the final turn.

At the top of the stretch, Saint Liam had a clear lead over the favorite.

Saint Liam drew clear down the stretch and went on to post a 3 3/4

 length victory.

The five-year-old recorded his sixth career win in 15 starts and adds

$300,000 to his bankroll. Saint Liam, owned by Mr. and Mrs. William

Warren, Jr., went over the $1 million mark for his career. Trained by

Richard Dutrow, Jr., Saint Liam came the closest last year to beating

eventual Horse of the Year Ghostzapper. Ghostzapper caught Saint Liam

in the deep stretch, though, to win the Woodward Handicap by a neck.

Roses in May went off as the 6-5 favorite in the Donn Handicap after

opening at 3-5 in the morning line. The five-year-old finished second

to Ghostzapper in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic.

Saint Liam returned $5.60, $3.00 and $2.20. Roses in May paid $2.60

and $2.10, and Eddington paid $2.20 for show.
