New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Risen Star Stakes winner Scipion
tops a field of nine three-year-olds for Saturday's $600,000 Louisiana Derby
at the Fair Grounds. The Louisiana Derby will be contested at the distance
of 1 1/16 miles.
Scipion registered a 1 1/4 length victory in the Risen Star Stakes for owner
Virginia Kraft Payson and trainer Patrick Biancone. For Saturday's race the colt
will start from post seven with Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens once again in
the saddle. Scipion has won two of five career starts for earnings of $143.240.
Another Hall of Fame rider, Jerry Bailey, has the mount on Overbrook Farm's
Storm Surge. This third place finisher in the Risen Star will break from post two.
He was previously ridden by Robby Albarado in all his starts. Trained by
Dallas Stewart, Storm Surge earlier this year won the Lecomte Stakes at the
Fair Grounds and has earnings of nearly $270,000.
Highly regarded High Limit will be making his three-year-old debut in the
Louisiana Derby. Trained by Bobby Frankel, High Limit won both starts last year
at Delaware Park. On Saturday he will be ridden by Ramon Dominguez and start
from post three.
The complete field for the Louisiana Derby from rail out is Sort It Out,
Storm Surge, High Limit, Real Dandy, Indy Storm, Wallstreet Scandal, Scipion,
Vicarage and Kansas City Boy.
